"They gave me the name Njoki" with Jana Winterhalter

July 25, 2020, 7 pm | LUX305, Cologne | Narrative

I begin to suspect that I had traveled on the train of curiosity, had arrived on the earth of mercilessness, had been welcomed into the house of the wondrous, had tasted of the river of impermanence and had been driven by the wind of incomprehensibility. That I am now lost in the forest of truths and do not know whether I am on my way home to my homeland or home to a foreign land.

It remains magical: We present you another salon evening with a story in words and pictures from Africa!

Kenya - Impressions from eight years of project work and life in and with East Africa
I traveled to Kenya at the age of 18 out of a thirst for adventure, in search of wide open spaces, red earth and smiling people. I found them. And with them, the life that plays out between these volumes of images: the relentlessness of nature, the barriers of one's own imprint, the incompatibility of cultures and the warm-hearted gesture of deep connection. To date, I have returned several times, accompanied many projects, seen their destruction and am still creating new ones - countless times I have claimed it was the last time. On this evening, I would like to share my experiences and stories from 8 years of relationship with a country that has taught me extremes, does not leave out any contradiction, does not fulfill any expectation, makes miracles happen, strikes relentlessly and gives patiently - and in which only impermanence endures. Jana Winterhalter, music and dance dramaturge You gave me the name 'Njoki' - the one who leaves to come back. JW
